Rapport Building
With my previous students, my first lesson will be used to gauge my student's abilities through exercises and pieces (for music lessons) or through their homework and exam papers (for academic subjects). For music lessons, I will ask my students what kind of music they enjoy, and from there I will incorporate my lessons into the pieces they enjoy playing. Besides teaching them the exam pieces, I will also allow my students to explore a wide range of repertoire to expose them to the various types of playing styles. For academic subjects, I will focus more on the student's weaknesses through guides and drills to strengthen their foundation in the subject. I will also pass down my tips to allow students to grasp the subject more easily. After every lesson, I will give feedback to my students' parents on the progress of their children and how I plan to proceed with my next few lessons, so as to allow the parents to better understand how the lessons flow. I recommend the parents to sit through the first few lessons if they are able to so that they can understand what their children will be studying and to also get a feel of my teaching style.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
As a musician, I enjoy playing different kinds of pieces and do find myself going back to exam pieces from time to time for a challenge. As such, I am quite familiar with the exam curriculum for piano students. On top of that, I still take time to practice my techniques through scales and as such am quite familiar with the entire syllabus. For academic subjects, I currently tutor my younger brother (who is 9) and younger sister (who is 16) in their work, and as such am quite familiar with the curriculum of both primary and secondary level education..
As a Good Tutor
I believe that good tutors have to be patient, encouraging and upbeat. As tutors, we are responsible for nurturing the talents of young children, and as such a balance between achievements and fun should be achieved by every tutor. On top of these basic requirements, I personally believe in customising my teaching materials to each student as each student has different capabilities, and as such having tailor-made materials will help each student work on their weaknesses better. Above all, tutors need to be engaging, as only through engagement can the tutors connect with the students, allowing for a more effective teacher-student relationship where skills can be passed down with ease.
