Commitment / Other Details
I am relatively free as although I am currently in NUS, I have no CCA. Most of my classes end before 4pm, so I usually have spare time.
Rapport Building
As mentioned, I genuinely enjoy working with kids, especially younger ones. I know many of them are just playful, hence tend not to do their work or 'slacking off'. But I believe by motivating them and telling them stories from my past experiences, they will be encouraged to do well. I like to tell stories and can entertain the children. I also believe that different people have different learning abilities and styles, hence I hope to get to know them more, so that I can tweak my teaching methods to fit their learning styles. I also feel like it is more about being their tutor, but also a friend to the tutees. Growing up, I have had tutors who eventually became so much more than a tutor, but also a friend and listening ear. I hope I can also make such an impact in my potential tutees' lives.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
As I am only looking to teach children at the primary level, I do have plans on keeping updated with the curriculum. I have cousins from Pri 3 to Pri 6, and I help them with their school work regularly, so I know the curriculum quite well. I am also willing to buy assessment books to help the children with their learning. I also believe by showing videos and telling them stories to fuel their creativity, they can learn and remember information better. Additionally, I have been through the Adam Khoo Learning camp and have learnt many techniques of memorising, speed reading etc. I hope to pass on this knowledge to my future tutees.
As a Good Tutor
Responsibility- I feel that a good tutor definitely needs to be responsible and feel that it is THEIR duty to help the children improve
Passion- I am a strong believer of the saying "Do it with passion or not at all." I believe passion is extremely important in tutoring, as it is definitely not an easy job. If the tutee has absolutely no interest in that subject, how do you gain his interest? Is it by showing videos of things he loves to excite him? Is it by thinking of ways to make the subject fun to learn?
Patience- I believe that seeing results takes time, seeing a change in attitude takes time. Some children are generally slower in their academic abilities. A good tutor must have the patience to see improvement.
