Rapport Building
Firstly, I make known to students the basic expectations I have for them, such as the doing of homework and having mutual respect for each other, and I ask them what are the expectations they have for me as well so that they trust me. Striking casual conversations with them is something I do occasionally to build a comfortable learning environment for them. To ensure that we take each other seriously when it comes to studies, I will always be honest in my assessment of their work, making sure that I put their needs before mine but at the same time giving constructive advice whenever it is necessary. I have not had the chance to interact with students' parents during my experience as a volunteer mentor, but I envision myself giving them regular feedback about the student's progress, being punctual for lessons, and also, finding out more about the student's personality from them so as to improve on the tutor-student chemistry.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
I find out from my university friends, who are also tutoring primary and secondary school students, the changes in curriculum and I also find out from relatives who are currently studying it as well.
As a Good Tutor
I feel that a good tutor firstly has self-confidence in order for the students to have faith in what they are being taught. With that comes humility which is essential when the student does not respond well to tutor's teaching strategies, requiring the tutor to adapt to different students' needs. Another important quality in a good tutor is having a very positive mindset, especially when the student lacks motivation. A good tutor is also resourceful, e.g. finding new practices, challenging the students' current knowledge, to ensure that the students have a broad understanding of what they are being taught.

There are many more qualities that make a good tutor, but I feel that one of the most important qualities a good tutor has is being a role model for the students. A good tutor does not have to be an ideal of what every student should aim for, but the tutor has to possess the right attitudes, values, and principles in life that are reflected by everything he/she does, in his/her mannerism, execution of teachings, encouragement, and advice to the students. This ensures that they are being instilled in a sense of direction and purpose in what they study, and that they willingly receive guidance from the tutor. There may be others who have views regarding this that differ from mine, but nobody can deny that the strongest indication of a good tutor is felt by the students themselves.
