As a Good Tutor
I think tutors have to be patient and be able to handle kids when they get distracted. For example, complete lesson itinerary while also giving the child multiple breaks. This can increase productivity as the child tend to be more focused.

    Rapport Building
It is definitely every tutor's goal to see improvements made by our students. However, before that can happen, I would use the first few lessons to understand my student better such as his/ her strong and weak point and their perception on the subject that I am teaching. This way, I am then able to adjust my teaching accordingly and hence better deliver my lesson. Instead of continuously pointing out my student's weak point and reprimanding them, I chose to use a strength-based approach in my teaching so that my student will be motivated and willing to work towards their goal. As for parents, I will update them on child's progress after every lesson and guide them on how they can help their child in their studies. Building rapport can only be done when there are a certain level of trust between the parents, child and tutor. Hence I will make the effort to dress up appropriately and turn up early for lesson and also to be polite and respectful when speaking to them. I am also open to receiving feedbacks as I see these as an opportunity for me to improve my teaching skills in the future.
    Keeping Up with Curriculum
As I am also working for a tuition centre, it will be easy for me to be updated with the curriculum such as exam weeks and also the syllabus. For my lesson, I will prepare my own checklist and will frequently check in with student on the topics taught in school so that it will be easier for me to pace my teaching.
    As a Good Tutor
I think basic qualities of tutors are really being patient, respectful and understanding. Every child have their own strengths and weaknesses thus I choose to use strength based approach during my teaching as a way to motivate my student to love math. Being patient with a child is important as it is a way to form connection with them. While being patient, the child will be more at ease during class and able to view math as a fun subject instead of one that is boring.

As for understanding, it is important to know the child better and the amount of stress and workload he/ she is able to cope with. A good tutor must not be one that give the child tons of work to do as they also have other tuition or CCAs or school homework that needs to be completed. Therefore, it is key to check in with the child how much work he/ she is able to do. We should always allow the child to voice out and state the amount of work, tutor will then attempt to negotiate if she thinks that more homework should be given to the child. This allows the child to know that he/ she have the autonomy and also understand that their decision are being respected by their tutor.

                Rapport Building
I usually like to understand their curriculum, and know how they are coping with their school-life balance in order to find out if there are other factors affecting their studies or performance. With parents, I would provide honest feedback based on how their child displays through their works, or if there are any underlying concerns which they might not have communicated with their parents.
                Keeping Up with Curriculum
I keep myself updated with the MOE syllabus as indicated on their website, and also browse through 10 year series and other relevant books which might be of help.
                As a Good Tutor
I always believe that patience is a MUST, regardless of the age of the student. Every student learns at a different pace, and through the learning process, understanding the needs of the students is also essential in identifying areas of concern. Additionally, being a good listener also helps in two-way communication, helping the student to strive better not only in grades, but also as an individual.

Building rapport as a tutor with my students is crucial for effective learning. It involves establishing a positive and trusting relationship with my students, which can help them feel more comfortable asking questions and seeking help when needed. To build rapport, I actively listen, show empathy, be patient, provide positive feedback, and create a safe and supportive learning environment.
