Rapport Building
Keeping Up with Curriculum
I check the latest syllabus at SEAB regularly and also browse the latest ten-year series to understand how the exam formats have changed. I also keep in touch with my friends who are MOE teachers to find out more about the new directions taken in schools. However, I do not merely help my students keep up with the curriculum. I help them keep with the world by discussing current affairs with them to ensure that they are articulate and well-informed young adults.
As a Good Tutor
I think good English tutors do not merely use the ten-year series in their teaching, but promote real-life application and appreciation for the language. In my teaching methods, I prefer to instill in my students a love of the language, beyond the ten-year series. I expose my students to a variety of text types and literature so that my students are able to appreciate and use English a many different settings. These text types could include articles from the Economist, science-fiction novels by George OrwelI, or even talks by a variety of speakers on www.ted.com. I highly believe in prepare my students for a globalised world by discussing current affairs and also emphasising the oral practice of English to prepare them for their futures as working adults.
