Rapport Building: Hello, I am Yi Chao and I am turning 20 this year and graduated from Eunoia Junior College. I am likely pursuing my university degree at the Imperial College London and planning to major in Physics. I have always enjoyed teaching others, especially when I see visible improvements in terms of their grades and attitude towards their studies. In terms of teaching, I am currently teaching O-level Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and Mathematics and H2 Math, Physics and Chemistry. Previously, I tutored H2 Physics, Chemistry, and Math for 1.5 years. I have thought over a dozen students in various different subjects and they have all seen improvements in their grades and understanding. With regards to my grades, I have consistently excelled in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Apart from scoring A in these subjects for A levels, I was second in my level for H2 Chemistry during my prelims and also scored 89 for my H2 Mathematics for my prelims. As Physics is my favorite subject, I decided to take up H3 NUS Modern Physics and even plan to pursue it in university. I also participated in the various science olympiads since secondary school. With regards to my style of teaching, I personally believe in understanding concepts from their fundamentals as I believe that is the only way to tackle all sorts of questions, not just standard ones. I believe this is the best way to learn something as I believe people are generally interested in learning something and therefore, I believe that people actually derive joy from truly understanding something and will therefore be motivated to learn even more. Beyond explaining concepts and teaching topics, I also look to go through practice questions and exam papers as that is how I evaluate whether my student actually understands what is going on. When it gets closer to the exam season, I would shift towards a more doing paper-oriented style in order to teach students how to apply their concepts towards questions and to get the key points that give the all-important marks. I will also provide notes, materials, and a lot of past year prelim papers for practise. I will subsequently mark the work and explain how to derive the best answer. Also, I am more than willing to answer any of the student's queries any time of the week from school or anywhere else. All in all, I am looking to help advance your understandings and grades in various subjects!

Rapport Building: Before the lesson starts, I'll have a conversation with parents to understand what are the challenges and difficulties faced by the child or feedback from language teacher, and find out the expectations of the child e.g C grade to B grade, or types of teaching formats/ usage of assessment books
After checking in with parent, I'll engage the child by asking what help he/she needs and find out the strengths and weakness of the child in this particular subject. I'll then source for assessment books to be used and recommend to parents.

I cater to the needs of the student and plan the lesson accordingly, thus the format of tutoring is flexible. It could be 50% questions on homework/tests and 50% assessment book.

Keeping Up with Curriculum: I refer to MOE's website for curriculum as I'm aware they update the curriculum regularly. In addition, I refer to PSLE past papers and assessment books to keep myself updated.

As a Good Tutor: I believe in being interested and understanding the subject matter as compared to memorising facts and I use scaffolding method to teach. I give my best in teaching my student and keep it at a comfortable pace and challenging them with homework to do.

I also visit popular bookstore regularly to see the syllabus and specific topics to focus on. Another important source for me is the students themselves. I will ask about how their teachers teach every now and then as well as the kinds of assessments they have to go through.

As a Good Tutor: I think that a good tutor must have both hard and soft skills. Beyond having the knowledge, the tutor must know how to present the information so that students will have an easier time learning. They should know how to empathise with their students since it is ultimately about the education and welfare of the student. Thus, a holistic way of managing students I think will make one an effective tutor.
